Police Can’t Arrest Herdsmen For Grazing Cattle On Airport Runways – Commissioner

The Nigeria Police Force has said it cannot arrest herdsmen who allow their cattle to stray onto and graze on airport runways in the country, Punch reports.

The Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, Mustapha Dandaura, stated this in an interview with one of their correspondents.
He said herdsmen could only be arrested in states where the anti-open grazing law was effective.
However, Dandaura said that all policemen and other security officials at the airports had been instructed to stay on high alert to prevent a situation whereby cows would take over airport runways.
He said, “It’s only in states where the anti-open grazing law is in place that herdsmen can be arrested for allowing their cattle to graze on airport runways. Apart from those states, we have not been told to start arresting herdsmen.

Gov Ajimobi Travels To Denmark In Bid To Resolve Herdsmen-Farmers Clash

Governor Ajimobi of Oyo State has visited Denmark in a bid to find a lasting solution to herdsmen farmers clash among others. Ajimobi announced this on his twitter and facebook pages saying;
''This visit to Denmark 🇩🇰 is to consider possible options to resolve the problem of Herdsmen-farmers clash amongst other things. The ranching method used by many countries like Denmark is a viable option. With this visit, we have seen ranching at its best and would be bringing farmers from Denmark to Oyo State for ‘Knowledge Transfer’ that will enhance our local beef output in the local and international market.''

South should set up ranches for indigenes

IN every adversity there is an opportunity. It is a normal trait of human behaviour that the most innovative thinking takes place when man is jolted out of his comfort zone by uncommon challenges dressed up in the garb of adversity. Some of the inventions by German scientists during the First and Second World Wars are still driving the world’s technological age. It is also true that if Nigeria had adopted the scientific and technological inventions of Biafran scientists during the Nigerian civil war, this country would probably have become to Africa what Japan is to Asia, gateway to rapid growth from Third World to First.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote an article entitled: A Puerile and Futile ‘Ban’ in response to a call by the Ohanaeze Youths Council, OYC, on the governors of the South-East zone to ban the consumption of beef produced from the cows herded by Fulani pastoralists. According to the OYC, if these herders (who now carry sophisticated firearms, invade farms with their cows and kill farmers and landowners) can’t see anyone to buy their cows, they will no longer graze them on farmlands belonging to other people.

Nigerian cows, worst milk producers globally –Ogbeh

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh, says cows raised in Nigeria are the worst milk producers in the world.

He said an average cow in the country produces less that one litre of milk per day, compared to other climes where a cow could produce 100 litres per day.

Ogbeh said this in Lagos on Thursday, at the 79th Anniversary of Ikoyi Club 1938.

According to the minister, an average cow in Holland produces a minimum of 50 litres of milk per day, while in the United States, milk production per cow could rise to over 100 litres.

He said moving cows from place to place was a major problem affecting cows and milk production in Nigeria, stressing that the earlier farmers started developing ranches for cows, the better it would be for the cow market and its entire value chain.

Farmers, millers set to crash rice price to N6,000/bag

Rice farmers, millers and processors on Wednesday announced that the price of a 50kg bag of rice will fall to as low as N6,000 in the next few months.

According to them, the current market price of rice, which is about N15,000 per 50kg bag, will drop to between N6,000 and N7,000 in a couple of months, going by the bumper wet season harvest by rice farmers.

Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting between rice farmers/processors and the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, at the ministry’s headquarters, in Abuja, the National President, Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Aminu Goronyo, told journalists that operators had resolved to currently reduce price of rice to N13,000 per 50kg, but stressed that the price would further drop to N6,000 in a few months.

He said, “This is just the beginning, the actual price of rice will come down because we are expecting a bumper harvest this year. We have sat down with the millers and have agreed that we are going to work together for the interest of Nigerians. I think you have been buying a bag of rice at the cost of N18,000, but today the price is between N13,000 to N15,000, meaning that the price is coming down.”

Asked whether the price would crash further to about N7,000 per 50kg bag, as was the case some years back, Goronyo replied, “Of course! Not even N7,000, it will crash to N6,000. Just give us some time; in fact, in the next few months and it will be for 50kg.”

The disappearing Nigerian dwarf goats, sheep, and cows

Nigerian dwarf goat male 2.JPG

One of the most puzzling things in Nigeria has been the speed with which the Nigerian dwarf goats, sheep and cows seem to be disappearing.

Over the Christmas weekend, this writer wanted to gift some of these types of goats to family members in Igboland, but was told that the goats were no where to be found in the target town and the nearby ones. The contact also stated that the cow equivalents called “Efi Igbo” in Igbo language was even scarcer. In fact, when one of the prominent rich men wanted to buy one of this type of cows for his annual family festival, none could be found in nearly all of Anambra state!

But, what got the writer worried was that when he wanted to know why finding the goats and cows was difficult, the voice from the other side of the phone line asked a very disturbing question: "WHY DO YOU WANT THESE TYPES OF GOATS?" He asked with an air of incredulity. He sounded almost indignant. “Who buys those goats these days?” he asked.

The writer then proceeded to inform the indignant man that those goats are famous abroad both as pets and as choice meat. The man was shocked. “What??” he asked, in shock. The writer informed the man in Nigeria that a lot of Nigerians and others in the US eat goat meats, and the dwarf goats form a major part of the goat census in the US.

At this point, the problem became clear. It is the usual problem that has kept Nigeria poor.

It is Nigerians' inability to see value in what God naturally endowed the country with.
If petroleum were not in huge quantities underground in Nigeria, the resource would have since been depleted, and future Nigerians would have had to import the resource to see what it even looks like.
It may still happen!

Well, this dwarf goat, sheep and cow problem is a challenge, and a huge opportunity.
