New Brands Of Local Rice Flood Major Markets, As Prices Of Major Items Dro

The local price of rice recorded a significant drop after weeks of price hikes following the closure of Nigerian land borders. Latest Nairametrics Food Price Survey reveals more brands of local rice have now flooded major markets in the country helping to drive down prices of local rice.

The latest household survey conducted by Nairametrics Research Team showed that some new brands of local rice now sell for as low as N17,000. Also, the prices of other items like round shaped tomatoes, bags of onions dropped from what was reported two weeks earlier.

Despite the price drops recorded, some major items such as palm oil, groundnut oil, and foreign rice increased in price. The report includes details on items that witnessed increase in price, items that reduced, special market/items as well as market insights.

Sylvanus Okpanachi reportedly graduated from a tertiary institution in 2013 and couldn't find a job. He hunted for a job for six years before he finally got employed this year. He was due to receive his very first salary on Monday, October 22. Unfortunately, he was killed in a road accident on Sunday, October 20.

Recovered N31.8 Billion Abacha Loot Was Spent On The Poor, Says FG

The Federal Government (FG) has disclosed how the recovered $104 million Abacha loot was spent. The Special Adviser to the President on Social Investments, Maryam Uwais announced that the money was spent on programmes designed to address the plight of poor and vulnerable Nigerians thereby alleviating poverty in the country.

Uwais disclosed this during her keynote address at a two-day Experts’ Training and Advocacy on Tracing and Recovery of Illicit Funds and Assets organised by the Human Environmental Development Agenda HEDA, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The Presidential aide said the total amount disbursed from the Abacha loot from August 2018 to the October payment cycle was $76,538,530 and $27,099,028 from the IDA credit. She explained that the funds were sent to beneficiaries under the National Cash Transfer Programme, which is a part of the National Social Investment Programme.

On what prompted the decision to distribute the funds to the poor, Uwais said that it was decided over by a combination of the Swiss government, the World Bank and the Federal Government. This was to ensure that the funds were well utilised and not diverted to private pockets, as was the case in the past.

Fire Guts Water Corporation In Onikan Lagos

Lagos Water Corporation in Onikan area of Lagos Island on Thursday gut fire.

It could be recalled that there was a fire outbreak at the Lagos Water Corporation, Onikan Waterworks, in the early hours of Thursday October 17, 2019, which disrupted water supply to the Onikan area of the State. In its preliminary investigation, the Corporation revealed that the fire started from the Waterworks Independent Power Plant (IPP) point and spread to the gatehouse, destroyed the underground cable and burnt the operational vehicle parked inside the waterworks.

As of press time on Thursday officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Team, Lagos State Fire Service, Federal Fire Service and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) were still battling the fire incident at the Water Corporation in Onikan roundabout, in Onikan area of Lagos Island, although the fire had been put under control and confined to a secluded portion of the complex.

Plantain is a staple crop grown throughout the tropics. In Africa, plantain and Banana are also an important source of carbohydrate in the diet of more than 70 million people. Since the demand and thus the price for this crop are continuously increasing, many farmers want to grow more plantains in order to raise their income. However, backyards cannot be readily extended since they are enclosed by houses or fences. The only way, therefore, to expand production is to grow plantains in fields at some distance from the village. In most cases such field-grown plantains are very poorly maintained. The result is a very modest yield from the first year onwards. Different methods of cultivation should accompany the change in site to achieve and sustain high-level yields for several years.

Following national discourse on rotational presidency and statements from certain quarters in the north, especially the political elites, fears of a renege on the hitherto, “Gentleman’s Agreement”, seems to be rife.

In an exclusive interview with the National President Of The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, Yerima Shettima, he told Independent that the north is of the feeling that the rotational presidency issue should be jettisoned.
Shettima who asked if the rotational presidency issue is constitutional stated that, “As you may know, time and event, changes a lot of things. Naturally, you will agree with me that we are practicing democracy and you will also agree with me that the North has faced a lot of challenges and as such, you cannot leave your house in hunger and take the little you have and give it out.

“So, we will ensure we lobby and work with progressive Nigerians towards this, considering the fact that we are faced with a lot of challenges; insecurity, unemployment rate is high and so many things were not done.

Junaid Mohammed: Igbos Can Go To Hell If Denied 2023 Presidency, Nobody Will Beg

Elder statesman and Second Republic lawmaker, Junaid Mohammed, on Tuesday said the Igbos are free to carry out their threats of secession if denied the Presidency in 2023.

He admonished politicians from the South-Eastern part of the country who are nursing the idea of becoming President in 2023 to perish the thought.

Speaking in a chat with Daily Independent, Junaid said currently the South -East has not put forward a credible person who is qualified to lead Nigeria.

” I challenge Igbos to secede if they are denied Presidency in 2023. If they don’t secede, let them go to hell. They have tried secession before but they were defeated and failed and they lost over one million people”.

“If they want to secede again because of 2023 politics, they are more than welcome. You think anybody will beg them not to secede?” he asked .
